What is IPL Hair Removal?
IPL lasers (Intense Pulsed Light) remove hair because they eliminate hair regeneration or growth. The technical term for how this process works is called Photo-thermolysis. When broken down into parts and translated, this word refers to light, heat, and elimination.
During the treatment, IPL shines light directly at the hair follicles. The color or melanin in the hair follicles then absorbs that light and this results in heat generated into the hair follicle which essentially disables the hair from growing because cells no longer regenerate in the follicle, and as a result, hair stops growing.
Hair and skin have something called melanin, which is what is responsible for pigment and color. In the past, most hair removal treatments worked mainly for those who had a certain skin color and hair color because those devices needed a specific pigment and a contrast between skin and hair color for best results.
Anyone who didn’t fit these parameters could not benefit from those hair removal methods. For example, if you had darker skin and darker hair, those treatments wouldn’t work for you. Conversely, if you had lighter hair and lighter skin, those treatments wouldn’t work for you either.

Is IPL Hair Removal Permanent?
When this treatment is chosen to remove unwanted hair, you will get permanent results. Other treatments that can be done at home only provide temporary results, and within a few days or maybe at most a week or two, you’ll be right back to where you started and the cycle is repeated until you take action and choose a treatment that will give you permanent results.
The difference between Laser and IPL hair removal
The major difference between “laser hair removal” and “IPL hair removal” is the type of light. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broadband pulsed light source, unlike laser which is a monochromatic coherent light source. Both methods remove hair by targeting the melanin in the hair follicle and permanent results are experienced from any of both.
